This sweet baby sweater is inspired by a classic design from the Fairytale Baby Book pamphlet by Susan Bates. In the fall of 2016, in preparation for our daughter Lucy’s arrival, I set out to create my own version of the sweater using the stitch pattern and center panel as a starting point, and - of course - in a different yarn! As I was knitting, I opted to not use or follow the original pattern, and instead created a design of my own: knit in the round from the bottom up, the gauge is different, the sizing and stitch count were changed, the yoke is shaped with a seamless set in sleeve, there is no opening at the back neck, and the neck is finished in a simple single crochet. As a result, I thought it would be nice to provide a download for this new version for you to knit.

Worthy of Note
The body and sleeves are worked in the round from the bottom up, then joined at the armholes. Decreases form the seamless set-in sleeve construction, and stitches are bound off for the neck shaping. The shoulders are shaped using short rows, and then bound off. Stitches are then picked up to work the neckband. You may find it easier to use the longer, larger circular after joining the body and sleeves until you decrease enough stitches to fit comfortably back onto the shorter circular.

Kelbourne Woolens Perennial (60% superwash Merino, 25% Suri alpaca, 15% nylon; 497 yds/100gm skein): caribbean 350, 1 skein.
GAUGE
28 sts and 37 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in 3 x1 Broken Ribbing on larger needles, after blocking.
Panel Chart (23 sts) = 3” (7.75 cm).
NEEDLES
1 – 16” (40 cm) US 1 (2.5 mm) circular.
1 – set US 1 (2.5 mm) DPNs.
1 – 16” (40 cm) US 2 (2.75 mm) circular.
1 – 24” (60 cm) US 2 (2.75 mm) circular.
1 – set US 2 (2.75 mm) DPNs.
Check your gauge and adjust needle size(s) accordingly if necessary.
NOTIONS
Cable needle, 2.75 mm crochet hook, darning needle.

20” (51 cm) body circumference, to fit 12–24 mos.
