Inspiration
My friend Carle, an indie dyer, from Nurturing Fibres dyed a special colourway called Little Dutch Boy. It was inspired by the story of a little boy who saves his village by putting his finger in a hole in the dyke wall.
It is a gorgeous self‐striping yarn and inspired me to knit this sideways shawl. I thought of my own boys and how every mom is her little boy’s hero. We learn to love getting stones and not flowers. We learn that while they can be rough, they need a safe place in their mother’s arms. We need the strength to help them grow into men with honourable characters; the space to let them learn, fall, get up and succeed. Every boy’s mom needs a cape to remind us of our important job. This is my modern take on a hero cape for moms.

Difficulty level: Beginner. The pattern includes the following: knit, purl, simple increases and decreases, picking up stitches, basic eyelet lace, picot bind off.

This shawl is knitted sideways in garter stitch. I wanted a shawl that could be pulled around you and feel all squashy like a hug. The edge of the body has Yarn Overs which are then picked up to complete the simple lace zig zag edge.

Size
140 ‐ 170cm (55 ‐ 67”) wingspan x 45 ‐ 60cm (18 ‐ 24”) centre width.
The size depends on how aggresively you block the shawl. You can also increase the wingspan by adding extra rows in the middle section.
