Parallelo is a parallelogram styled shawl that builds on and combines colourwork techniques as you knit along. The primary colourwork techniques in this shawl include Mosaic and slip stitches, it also incorporates short rows in 2 sections as well as cables in the last two sections.

Parallelo was initially released as a 6 clue mystery knit along to celebrate Third Vault Yarns 9th Birthday.

The shawl uses in between 290g and 320g of fingering weight yarn (1180m - 1300m), with the possibility to knit in several different colour combinations. On average each clue uses around 25-30g each of 2 different colours. However there is some variance with clue 3 and 4 using less than the other 4 clues.

To make your yarn choices you can either choose in fingering weight

  • Up to 200g each of C1 & C2 in high contrasting colours
  • Up to 200g of C1 and 100g each of C2 & C3. C2 and C3 must have high contrast with C1
  • 100g each of 4 colours with High contrast between pairs
  • 50- 70g each of 6 colours, with high contrast between pairs.

Yarns used by testers range from a bouncy wool 4ply, to a plant fibre fingering weight yarns. Please be aware that plant fibre yarns, were knitted on a tighter gauge for visual appeal so use a needle size that produces a pleasing fabric, however this will result in a thinner shawl.

It is possible to use DK yarns in place of fingering/4ply weight, however this will create a much bigger shawl and at minimum you will need to match the meterage requirements for the thinner weight yarns which is between 1200m and 1300m all together. However this option has only been partially tested, so please keep this in mind if choosing to use a thicker weight yarn.

Needle Size:

For wool 4ply/ Fingering weight yarn 3.5mm US4

or needle size to produce fabric you are happy with.

Whilst achieving a specific gauge is not highly important for this shawl, achieving a consistent gauge throughout is important.

For people who work better with charts, charts are available for the clues that are effectively illustrated in that way and will be released at the same time. However they will provide a slight spoiler as they show the design for that clue.
