Choose a tight size so the ribbed fabric grips the head securely, or choose a loose size so the hat doesn’t mess up hair. The sample for this hat was crocheted with positive ease (because that’s how my friend likes to wear her hats) Since it is crocheted from the top down, the size can be determined by trying it on. If it’s too tight, return to the increase rounds and give it some more increases. If it’s too loose, remove one of the
increase rounds. My family reports that these hats are warmest under a coat hood, the fluffy holed texture is not always wind resistant. That said, these are the hats that they squabble over by the back door.

I took the name from “Yan, Tan, Tether, Mether” a variation of a sheep counting song from Britain. Mether is the fourth sheep (I think?) and there are four branches to the hat crown. But the big advantage is it sounds pretty, and no one else has named a watchcap Mether yet on the Ravelry database.
