Maelstrom
Although the design looks complicated this poncho is simply made from sixteen squares. Twelve of them are exactly alike and the other four start in the same way but are incomplete.
The poncho in the photos was made in bulky mohair yarn but other yarns can be used and the pattern can be adapted to many sizes. Only one ball of yarn is used at a time. If you choose to use DK yarns the largest number of stitches on the needle at any time would be about 35. Using thicker yarns there might only be 20 stitches.
This is very similar to our Best of Both Whirls afghan design.
The photographs are very old but are the best we have.
