Kostroma Cowl

Written pattern with US and Metric equivalents.

Perfect for highly variegated yarns!

Two textures create a lightly undulating edge and standing collar.

Simple to memorize three stitch/two row repeat.

Knit flat and joined with a single short seam.

Materials

90 yd (82m) of Jumbo Yarn @ 2 WPI
~Sample used Malabrigo Rasta in Zarzamora
Yardage is tight - work closely to gauge or buy a second hank – see gauge note below.

US 17 (12.75mm) needles
or US 15 (10mm) if you knit loosely
Row Counter (optional)
Darning Needle

Measurements

Sample = 6” (15.25 cm) wide @ texture, to 7” (17.75) wide at stockinette, by 37” (94 cm) long, flat.
Measured ‘as knit’ no blocking.

Gauge

7.75 stitches and 11 rows = 4” /10 cm square
in unblocked stockinette
gauge is not critical, but will affect size and yardage!
I used all but 3.5 yds after tassel.

Sample used US 17 (12.75 mm) needles, with yarn @ 2 WPI, but I knit tightly - you may want to start with US 15 (10 mm) needles if you don’t.

About the Name

Kostroma Resurrection is the name of a lovely onion domed church in Russia that has the same texture and shape as the (inverted) bottom of the project.
Also the name of a character in a Slavic fairy tale ‘Kupala and Kostroma’ - twins separated by an enchantment/spell of the Sirin bird’s song, which they were warned not to listen to.
