ABOUT
Written in 5 sizes for the whole family, the Kenaston Toque might just be the easiest hat you ever make! In this pattern, you will essentially crochet a rectangle of ribbing that tapers off slightly at one end to create a gently sloping crown that also adds structure to hold your pompom securely in place. (No floppy pompoms around here!) You will then work one quick seam up the side to turn your rectangle into a tube, and then cinch the top closed before adding your pompom!

MATERIALS
Yarn: Worsted—Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Umber

• 80% acrylic, 20% wool
• 197 yds (180 m) per 3 oz (85 g) skein
• Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes

Yardage: 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) skein(s) of Wool-Ease, or
175 (200, 240, 275, 300) yds
160 (183, 219, 251, 275) m

Substitute Lion Brand Wool-Ease with any similar category 4 (worsted) medium weight yarn that matches gauge. Always swatch with your chosen yarn and hook combination before beginning to ensure you are happy with the resulting fabric.

Hook: Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, several locking stitch markers to help with seaming (optional), pompom maker (sample shown uses a Clover brand 3⅜“ pompom maker)

MEASUREMENTS
The measurements below show the finished hat measurements. The first set of numbers is the circumference, the second set of numbers is the height, unfolded. This hat is intended to be worn with approximately 1-3” (2.5-8 cm) of negative ease for sizes 1-3, and 3-5” (8-13 cm) of negative ease for sizes 4 and 5. Hat will stretch slightly with wear.

Sizing: This hat is written in five sizes as follows: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5). Make sure to follow the numbers for your size only.

Size 1: Baby - 13” (33 cm) | 8” (20 cm)
Size 2: Toddler - 15” (38 cm) | 9” (23 cm)
Size 3: Child - 17” (43 cm) | 10.5” (27 cm)
Size 4: Adult Small - 18” (46 cm) | 12.5” (32 cm)
Size 5: Adult Large - 19” (48 cm) | 13” (33 cm)

Sample shown is Size 4 worn on a head circumference of 22” (56 cm) for 4” (10 cm) of negative ease.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row.

Reversible: There is no right side or wrong side to this fabric; both sides are identical. Whichever side you choose to wear as the “right side” is your preference.

To Make In Another Yarn Weight: Reference the Measurements section to determine the desired hat circumference and height that you will need to achieve. Work a gauge swatch to determine how many stitches you will need to achieve the proper height. Then, simply work the pattern as-written!

Sizing Note: If you are unsure of which size to make, simply work the Row 2 and Row 3 repeats as instructed until your hat measures as follows:

• 3-5” (8-13 cm) smaller than the head circumference of the wearer for adults
• 1-3” (2.5-8 cm) smaller than the head circumference of the wearer for all other sizes
