This hat is knitted using stranded colorwork techniques. It has a two color ribbing. Incan textiles from Peru were the inspiration for the motif designs on this hat. The cat and the wave pattern come from a garment panel, while the pattern on the crown was loosely adapted from a poncho. The little animal, a mythical creature, in the narrow band is from a mantle fragment.

The pattern instructions are clear and easy to work, taking all the stress out of knitting a colorwork hat. The pattern features detailed written instructions, photos, and complete charts.

22 inches (56 cm) circumference, 8 inches (20.5 cm) depth

Gauge
36 stitches and 36 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm) in stranded work

9 stitches = 1 inch (2.5 cm) in stranded work
approx. 9 rounds = 1 inch (2.5 cm)

Materials/yarn

US#1 (2.25mm) 16 or 20” (40 or 50 cm) circular needles
US#2 (2.75mm) 16 or 20” (40 or 50 cm) circular needles
US#2 (2.75mm) DPNs

The pattern is done in fingering weight yarn in 5 colors. The yardage required varies from 92 yards to 16 yards, depending on the the color.The original is worked using Knitpicks Palette.
