IDK (I Don't Know) Half Circle Shawl
Do I have enough yarn for this shawl? What weight do I need? I don’t know (IDK) but that’s all right! Just grab some yarn that’s begging to be knit, cast on at the center top and don’t stop until you’re ready to, or until you are almost out of yarn. Then bind off, block and enjoy.
This shawl is perfect for that special yarn that you want to use every single bit of. Maybe you’ve got some handspun, but you don’t know how much. Or a beautiful gradient. Give it a whirl.
The pattern can be done in fingering, sport, DK or worsted weight yarn - your choice. It doesn’t get more flexible than that!

This shawl is a half-circle, worked top down, from the center out. It consists of wedges separated by an eyelet faux cable. Color changes will show up as arcs radiating out from the center. The edging is a traditional faggot design. It is optional, but it does keep the shawl from curling. Work as many rows as you care to.
Please note that the pattern does not include instructions on how to do stripes. That is entirely up to the whim and creativity of the knitter. This project page explains how I did the striping on the light/dark brown sample pictured here.
Skill level - advanced beginner. Requires yo, ssk and keeping track of markers.
I encourage everyone to make project pages for this pattern so others can see how different amounts and types of yarn turn out. Here’s a sample of results from my test knitters:
Lace weight - not recommended
Fingering weight - 393 yd (360 m) on US 2.5 (3.0 mm) gave 60 x 18.5 in (152 x 50 cm)
DK weight - 548 yd (501 m) on US 8 (5.0 mm) gave 48 x 23 in (122 x 58 cm)
Sport weight - 370 yd (338 m) on US 5 (3.75 mm) gave 44 x 20 in (112 x 51 cm)
Worsted weight - 460 yd (421 m) on US 8 (5 mm) gave 57.5 x 26 in (146 x 66 cm)
Worsted weight - 240 yd (219 m) on US 8 (5 mm) gave 38 x 16 in (96 x 41 cm)
Worsted weight - 605 yd (553 m) on US 8 (5 mm) gave 52 x 23 in (132 x 58 cm)
