I wanted to design a slouchy hat I could wear. For me, those big slouchy hats are too heavy and too sloppy.
So, this is my slouchy hat and I love the way it finished!! Yes, it is slouchy, but not too much. The eyelet lace pattern holds the shape nicely and gives a tidy/neat look. Also the lace pattern makes this hat not too heavy, which I love. A real buttonhole with a button adds a nice finishing touch too.
NEEDLES
Starting with straight needles for ribbing/buttonhole and change to circular needles for the lace pattern knitted in the rounds. You need to use DPN after decreasing a couple of rounds, but there is no Yarn over, so you don’t have to deal with YO with DPN ☺
YARN
Sown in Tosh vintage – this yarn is a great choice for this hat. This yarn’s bouncy texture keeps the shape well and shows the lace pattern well. Nice and warm.
NO Button Band
If you wish to knit in the round from the beginning (no button band) please follow the instructions below ---
CO 99sts with smaller 16” long circular needles and join into the round.
Round1 - (P1, K2 tbl)repeat around.
Round2 - (P1, K2)repeat around.
Repeat these 2rounds total 12~14 rounds.
White hat – Classic Elite Yarns/Classic Silk (used 150yards)
This yarn is cotton/silk/nylon blend. I knitted 8” from CO instead of 9”, since the yarn doesn’t have a body like Tosh vintage. I am looking forward to wearing this hat all year around in Sausalito.
Turquoise hat – Rowan/Calmer (used 160yards)
Smaller gauge yarn than suggested, but this yarn is very stretchy and very soft with cotton/polyester blend. If you wear a smaller size hat, this yarn works, but not for a medium/large size. This hat is also 8” from CO to finish with one ball of yarn.
Both ribbing with a button and the lace stitch pattern give a nice range of sizes. Any yarn with 19~21 sts/ 4” with St.st would work.
FINISHING
The picture of sewing is - button flap to ribbing band. Using contrasting color to show better. You might want to use the left over from long tail CO. Sew from inside of the hat.
A beautiful hand-fabricated flower button on turquoise hat is designed by Gone Metal Studio.
The last picture is a matching fingerless gloves. Please check “Diamond Lace Fingerless Gloves” for more detail.
