“Therefore all seasons shall be sweet to thee,
Whether the summer clothe the general earth
With greenness, or the redbreast sit and sing
Betwixt the tufts of snow on the bare branch
Of mossy apple-tree, while the night-thatch
Smokes in the sun-thaw; whether the eave-drops fall
Heard only in the trances of the blast,
Or if the secret ministry of frost
Shall hang them up in silent icicles,
Quietly shining to the quiet Moon.”

From “Frost at Midnight, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Samuel Coleridge wrote “Frost at Midnight” in 1798. The poem is old and venerable, with a few references so antique that they are now indecipherable without research. And still, like magic, the images and emotions it contains are so fresh that they can move us from a distance of 220 years. The poet sits before the fire with his sleeping baby in a moment of perfect peace and lets his thoughts roam backward and forward in time. His wish for his child is simple: to grow up to “wander like a breeze/By lakes and sandy shores, beneath the crags/Of ancient mountain, and beneath the clouds,” to drink in the beauty that surrounds him, and to be happy. Somehow, this poem brings to mind both the powerful nostalgia of the holiday season and the fresh beginning of the new year just around the corner. I think the last stanza makes a beautiful holiday blessing, wherever you may be: from the warmth of summer in the southern hemisphere to the frozen drifts of the far north, may the season be sweet to you, and full of peace.

The Frost at Midnight Cowl is a sweet, comforting hug of a cowl. Made with a super bulky yarn, it can be knit in just a few hours: about as quickly as frost appears on a windowpane and perfect for those almost-inevitable midnight knitting sessions as the holidays draw near! The design features a simple texture and eyelet stitch pattern to suit both men and women, and while the pattern comes in one size, it’s very easy to adapt for just about anyone on your list.
