Frillyilly is a gently shaped scarf that is perfect for showcasing your extra special skeins of yarn. It is constructed sideways in one piece with a simple lacy edge that forms on all sides as you knit, making it particularly lovely to wear folded over. Frillyilly is such a treat to knit, a perfect combination of engaging, relaxing, and satisfying - you can take it anywhere and pick up right where you left off without missing a beat. This is a great project for any type of yarn whether it’s solid, speckled, variegated, smooth, fluffy, etc. - making it a fantastic stash buster and gift knit too!

This pattern has full written instructions as well as charts for visual knitters.

Yarn
1 skein of fingering weight (4ply) yarn (I used Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles at 366m/400yd per 100g/3.5oz col. Kandos Twilight).

Needles & Notions
Pair of 3.75mm (US 5) needles. I like to use an 80cm/31.5” circular needle set but straight are fine also.
2 different stitch markers (one for beginning of row and one for the end). Tapestry needle.

Tension/Gauge
20 sts x 38 rows to 10cm (4”) on 3.75mm (US 5) needles over garter stitch pattern before blocking.

Finished Measurements
155cm (61”) long x 28cm (11”) deep at centre (unblocked).

Yarn substitution and different needle sizes:
This pattern is suitable for all types of yarn in any weight. Specific details of samples and projects in various yarns and weights are best found in Ravelry projects (check out my Hedgehog Fibres Alpaca Boucle samples, one held single and one double for yummy fluffy inspo).
As a general guide I recommend the following minimum amounts for different yarn weights and needle sizes to get a nice sized scarf:

Lace: 100g/3.53oz yarn and 3.25mm (US 3) needles.
Fingering: 100g/3.53oz yarn and 3.75mm (US 5) needles.
Sport: 100g/3.53oz yarn and 4mm (US 6) needles.
DK: 200g/7.05oz yarn and 4.5mm (US 7) needles.
Worsted: 200g/7.05oz yarn and 5mm (US 8) needles.
Bulky: 200g/7.05oz yarn and 5.5mm (US 9) needles.

If using fluffy yarns like boucle or brushed alpaca and mohair, you might like to go up a 1/2 a needle size for lace, fingering, and sport weight yarns, and a full needle size for the heavier weight yarns.
