This charming bonnet with a vintage flair will keep babies and little children protected as well as adorable. Looking for a matching cardigan to create a really special outfit? Here it is!

CONSTRUCTION:

This bonnet is knit seamlessly and features an easy lace pattern. The front of the bonnet is knit flat; the crown is knit in the round. An attached I-cord and I-cord ties are worked on the neck portion. Both charts and written instructions are provided to accommodate personal preference.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, purling, decreasing, knitting in the round, following a simple lace pattern (charts and written instructions provided), working I-cord and attached I-cord (explanations provided), yarn over.

SIZES:

To fit head circumference up to: 16 (17, 18 // 19, 20) inches or 41 (44, 46 // 48, 51) cm.
Finished bonnet is approximately 8.75 (10, 11 // 12.25, 13.25) inches or 22 (25.5, 28 // 31, 33.5) cm across front (jaw-to-jaw across forehead). Please note: for optimal fit, some negative ease is built in.
Bonnet depth is: 6 (6.75, 7 // 7.75, 8) inches or 15 (17, 18 // 19.5, 20.5) cm.

In general it’s best to go by the child’s actual head measurement when selecting the appropriate size. The age labels are just general guidelines.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 90 (100, 110// 120, 130) yards or 82 (91, 101 // 110, 119) meters of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino 55% Wool, 33% Microfiber, 12% Cashmere ; 137yd/125m per 50g/1.76oz ball or similar sport weight yarn.
Note: If substituting a different yarn weight, please note that row gauge and therefore bonnet total depth may be affected.

NEEDLES:

  • US 4 or 3.5 mm needles (or size needed to match stockinette stitch gauge)
  • matching set of double pointed needles (for crown)
  • US 3 or 3.25 mm needles (or one size smaller than needles used to match stockinette gauge)
  • matching set of double pointed needle (for I-cord)

NOTIONS:

  • 8 stitch markers (including a different color for BOR m)
  • tapestry needle

GAUGE:

24 sts x 32 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch after blocking using larger needles.
