Flowerdown
Some patterns write themselves, and that was certainly the case for this hat. The hat whipped up really quickly, right to the point where I started the flower. Sometimes the best thing to do is to walk away, so I went to Flowerdown Barrows. It’s a peaceful spot; I sat and contemplated. A whole new approach to the flower ran around my head. Once home, I swatched and immediately out popped the exact flower that I had in mind.
The hat is worked from the bottom up, in garter-stitch throughout. The brim is worked in rows, before joining in the round for the body. The colours alternate each row: this is easy to achieve when working in the round, but a bit harder for the brim. This technique is fully described in the pattern.
The flower is fully removable, so can be swapped out for any other accessory you can think of as long as it has a button-hole to attach to the hat.
In order for the hat to fit snuggly, there is negative ease built into the pattern. This means that the finished size is smaller than the size of head it will fit. Please take this into account when choosing which size to knit.
The sample shown uses two DK weight 3-ply mainly acrylic yarns. The pattern looks best if one yarn is a solid neutral colour, and the other variegated.
Difficulty: intermediate. You will need to work flat and in the round in one row stripes, the flower requires a cable or knitted cast-on, short rows and optionally the Turkish cast-on.
