Hunter Hammersen’s Curls are my favorite thing to
knit right now. I have one completed, a second on
the needles, and they are fantastic. I asked her how
she would feel about me designing a Curl of my own,
and she was enthusiastic. So! Here we go.
This pattern is a three-dimensional shawl meant to
wrap cozily around your neck and shoulders, and
stay put without any pinning or slipping. It starts with
a circle designed to cup one shoulder, and continues
into a Curl that wraps nicely around your neck. Knit it
as long and large as you personally prefer!
I wanted to design to commercial yarn this time, and
picked the Abstract Fibers colorway Bonfire on the
base Temptation. I wanted a stitch pattern that was
evocative of flames and worked with the yarn’s color
changes instead of fighting them, so came up with
a swatch that opens up nicely, and the colorway’s
three to four stitch pops of color occasionally stack
to make little snaps and flashes. Perfect!
Another idea I’ve been playing with is making a
circular start that at some point breaks free to be
worked back and forth, rather than having circles
or triangles or simple rectangles. When I saw the
Curl shape I immediately started imagining ways to
work from a circular start into a Curl. I needed a nice
circular motif that would merge gracefully into my
chosen stitch pattern. I found Franklin Habit’s Laura
Star, and modified it to suit.
The motifs are designed so the shawl doesn’t have
a right and a wrong side; everything is in reversible
knit/purl patterns. There are also optional beads. :-) I
hope you enjoy knitting this as much as me!
