I would gladly live out of a backpack if it meant I could see the world. – anonymous

When I first wrote this felted backpack pattern, my daughter was 6 years old and wanted to pick her own colors and style. This was at the height of the felting and fun fur craze, so a purple and pink backpack was designed and worn to everyday of first grade.
Now some 20 years later, this pattern still holds up and is an ideal felting project for kids and adults. Fun to make, easy to modify, customizable for favorite colors, it will provide a great vehicle for transporting small knitting project bags, stuffed animals, books, snacks and an assortment of odds and ends.

Send your little one off with a custom knit and felted backpack in the colors of their choice OR make yourself a fun carryall for your everyday errands.

Embellish it! I love using buttons to embellish knitted items. There are many novelty buttons available so you can really personalize your backpack.

PRINTING NOTE: This is a checklist pattern; it is not necessary to print the entire pattern if you prefer not to use the checkboxes for each section. Yarn is held double throughout.

PATTERN NOTES:
The base of the bag is worked as a complete rectangle and bound off, then picked up around its entirety to insure a symmetrical felted seaming.

Yarn is held double! (Chunky or Bulky yarn may be substituted.)

Tech edit and graphic layout by Corrina Ferguson. Test knitters were Val Arthur, Jean Gross, Tracey Henick, Brenda Kochensparger, Susan Rylowicz and Ann Templin.
