100g is also known as a “hectogram”. This unit of weight is rarely used, except in Italy where it translates as “ettogrammo”, shortened to etto. This pattern is called the Etto Scarf, as it uses those etti of yarn in your stash that you are not quite sure what to do with!

About this pattern
This scarf is a great stash-buster, use 100g of any 4ply, DK or aran yarn in your stash! It works really well with semi-solid hand dyed yarn too!

It is a wide triangular shape, meaning your yarn goes into efficiently forming the wide wings of the scarf, rather than creating a deep point. The scarf can be worn as a light neckerchief in spring or summer, and it fits neatly under a coat in the autumn and winter. Choose to tie it at the neck, fix it with a shawl pin or add buttons to secure the ends. As the scarf is worked from the bottom tip up, the triangular shape is there from the very beginning. There is no danger of running out of yarn before you achieve the correct shape. Just keep working until you have no yarn left! If you have more than 100g of your chosen yarn, you can keep working for a bigger, warmer scarf.

Level
This pattern is aimed at improving beginners and beyond. It uses the basic UK chain, half treble, treble and double treble crochet stitches (US Chain, half double, double and treble). Detailed pictorial guides for more inexperienced crocheters are provided in the separate file that comes with this pattern.

You will need

  • 100g of wool or acrylic yarn of either 4ply, double knit or aran (fingering/light worsted/worsted) weight yarn^. Don’t mix yarn weights in a single scarf. If you have more yarn, great! Just work until your scarf is a big as you would like or you run out of yarn! Use a multi-coloured yarn cake or lots of leftovers for a striped scarf.
  • Yarn needle
  • Optional: Shawl pin or 2 buttons to fasten your scarf

Important: cotton yarn can be very dense and 100g may not have enough length to make a wearable scarf. If using cotton yarn, or a yarn with a high % of cotton, make sure you also have sufficient meterage - see the “size” section detailed in the pattern.

Hook size
You should use a hook that is one full size bigger than the recommended hook to ensure you get a good drape to your scarf. Broadly speaking, you should use the following hook/yarn combinations for this pattern:
•4mm (G) hook for fingering/4ply yarn
•5mm (H) hook for double knit/light worsted yarn
•6mm (J) hook for aran/worsted yarn
