About the Pattern:
Visits to my Grandmother Elsie’s house are always memorable, and prominent in all of those memories is her favorite brocade-patterned afghan. The diamond texture and thick wool instantly make me feel cozy and warm, so it was the perfect inspiration for this hat!
The squishy split brim is knit flat then joined in the round to knit the brocade pattern. This construction creates a hat that keeps your ears covered for maximum warmth without needing to be pulled too far down your forehead or bunching up at the back of your neck. The braided tassels and furry pom-pom add a touch of whimsy to your finished hat but are completely optional.
Yarn:
You will need approximately 190 yds (174 m) / 80 g of DK weight yarn.
The samples, both for 24 in (61 cm) size, were knit with:
Orange Slouchy: Farmers Daughter Fibers, Pishkun DK, 100% Rambouillet 184 yds (168 m) / 72 g in the Salmon Berry colorway.
White Snug: Cascade Yarns, Aegean Tweed, 164 yds (150 m) / 46 g in color 07.
Needles:
Choose needles that complement your yarn and a method you are comfortable with for knitting in the round. I used US 5 (3.75 mm) for the brim, US 6 (4 mm) for the body.
Gauge:
2x2 rib on US 5 (3.75 mm); 24 sts x 26 rows = 4 in (10 cm)
Brocade on US 6 (4 mm); 19 sts x 24 rounds = 4 in (10 cm)
Size:
The pattern is written in four sizes with 2 in (5 cm) of negative ease to fit a head circumference of 20 (22, 24, 26) in 51 (56, 61, 66) cm. There are also options for a snug or slouchy fit.
