✨ The Story Behind Your Next Knit

This fun shawl was inspired by La Boca in Buenos Aires, Argentina. La Boca used to be a shipyard in Argentina’s capital. The dockworkers that lived there built their houses from cast-away ship building materials like planks and corrugated sheet metal, and there was never enough leftover paint to color an entire house -- the homes and businesses in La Boca are a rainbow of patchwork colors. The neighborhood has never lost its colorful exterior, and El Caminito is now a touristy street in La Boca, full of steakhouses, street artists, and tango music. This shawl is named after that vibrant town, and and I hope you enjoy knitting it as much as I loved bringing its energy to life!

🧶 Quick Highlights:

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (knowledge of mosaic colorwork is helpful, but this pattern makes it a joyful adventure in color!).
  • Techniques: Knit stitch, basic increases/decreases, mosaic knitting (slipped stitches), picking up stitches from a garter edge.
  • Construction: Worked as a sideways triangle shawl then stitches are picked up along both of the shorter sides and increased as a traditional triangle shawl (it’ll make sense, I promise!).
  • Special Features: Multi-color patchwork design (5 CCs + MC!), easy mosaic colorwork, inspired by travel, versatile shawl shape.
  • Yarn Weight: Fingering weight.

📐 Sizes & Finished Measurements:

  • Size: One size
  • Actual Measurements:
  • Depth: 25” (63.5 cm) Length Along Top Edge: 72” (183 cm)
  • Tip: Exact gauge is not critical, but a significant difference will affect the final size and yarn requirements. Knit a swatch, friend! 😉

🧶 Yarn Requirements :

  • Recommended Yarn: Mary Ann by Wonderland Yarns (85% Fine Merino Wool, 15% Nylon; 475 yds 434 m, 4 oz 114 g, Fingering Weight) in Goats Beard. Approx. 387 yds 354 m, 3.3 oz 93 g needed.
  • CC 1/2/3/4/5 (5 mini skeins) - Mary Ann by Wonderland Yarns (85% Fine Merino Wool, 15% Nylon; Each mini skein is 118 yds 108 m, 1 oz 28 g, Fingering Weight) in Mice in the Tea #15.
    • CC1 (Teal): Approx. 95 yds 87 m, 0.81 oz 23 g needed.
    • CC2 (Royal Purple): Approx. 79 yds 72 m, 0.67 oz 19 g needed.
    • CC3 (Lime Green): Approx. 67 yds 61 m, 0.56 oz 16 g needed.
    • CC4 (Magenta): Approx. 71 yds 65 m, 0.60 oz 17 g needed.
    • CC5 (Dark Grey): Approx. 108 yds 99 m, 0.92 oz 26 g needed (instructions are included to adjust the pattern slightly if your CC5 is a standard mini skein 0.88 oz 20 g)
  • Or similar weight yarn to achieve gauge, this shawl is PERFECT for scraps! Choose colors that pop and highlight that awesome patchwork vibe!

🥢 Needles:

  • US5 (3.75 mm) and US6 (4.0 mm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge at least 40” (102 cm) long.

✂️ Notions:

  • Tapestry needle (for weaving in all those colorful ends!)
  • Stitch markers (1 unique marker and 16 additional markers, for keeping track of all that mosaic magic!)

📏 Gauge:

  • 23 stitches and 36 rows = 4” /10 cm in Garter Stitch using the smaller needles after a light blocking.
  • Exact gauge is not critical, but because the shawl requires nearly the entire skein of each color, deviation from the gauge will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements.

📝 Pattern Notes & Support:

  • The pattern is written out, the colorwork is only charted. (So make sure you’re comfortable with charts, or ready to learn a new skill!)
  • Pattern has been professionally tech edited by Emily from knit3together. You know I’m all about that precision and polished finish! 🤓
  • This design was test knit by users nevolik, bobandlesa, diebabs, beesnez, omiegosh, and poisednivy. A huge shoutout and thank you to my amazing test knitters who made this pattern shine! 🤩
  • Errata Alert! There is a minor mistake in both Chart A and B. On Row 27, the k2tog should be worked in the active color, not the inactive color. (We fix ‘em and we own ‘em, just like a true knitter!)
