This felted bag was inspired by the multitude of gradient options in Kraemer’s Mauch Chunky yarn. The problem with Mauch is that it’s a classic wool that is wonderfully feltable, but not otherwise pleasantly squeezable, so I had resisted its color temptations for quite some time. The Glitter Ninja mentioned an oversized Hobo bag, and my hands started itching for my needles. And then they itched the entire time I was working on the bag- turns out I have a mild wool intolerance, lol.
The pre-felting gauge is 12.5 stitches and 17 rows over 4” using a size 10 needle; the felted gauge is 15 stitches and 24 rows over 4”.
The bag is knitted in the round, in one piece, top-down, and utilizes a Kitchener graft along the bottom. The strap is knitted separately, also in the round to make it stronger, and to allow for the fair isle pixelated gradient pattern to continue. This large hobo bag takes 240 yards each of four different colors (2 skeins of each of four colors when using Mauch Chunky), and measures 19” wide x 18” tall (23” x 25” pre-felting).
The Glitter Ninja has fabulous gradient kits available in a myriad of colors (and un-colors, like grey, my personal favorite)!
