Double Crossed - Knit Version
This shawl is knitted in L shapes to create simple garter stitch squares. It is the combination of yarns that create the subtle shading effect.
Nine plain yarns are used and these can be seen in the triangles along the top edge. The nine yarns, used in every possible combination, give a total of 36 mixed squares, making 45 different shades altogether.
Because it is made with two strands held together it is best to choose lightweight yarns. You can change the size of the squares to suit your chosen yarn.
This design is closely related to our Double Vision afghan. You might like to look at the projects for that pattern to see what colour combinations work well.
There is also a crochet version of this pattern.
The pattern is also available in Mufflermatics an ebook of mathematical scarves and shawls.
