Cordillera (Crochet Version)
This shawlette uses a crochet interpretation of Old Shale, a traditional Shetland lace pattern often misreferred to as “Feather and Fan,” another Shetland patten that looks similar but it worked differently. In crochet, the pattern is similar to chevron patterns, but is worked with chain spaces to appear lacy, as its Shetland lace inspiration. Suitable for comfortable beginners as well as more advanced crocheters looking for a mindless project. You will need to be comfortable either carrying two yarns along the sides of a work or weaving in the ends from the stripes.
The Main Chart can be repeated as many times as you want, so the pattern works with any yarn weight, needle size, or hook size.
Yarn
Choose 3 colours of a DK weight, about 110 yards each. Your yarn choice will determine the weather and style of this item. I used Llama Una by Mirasol, in 8202 Gull (grey), 8207 Forest (green), and 8204 Gold, for a really weatherproof autumn-coloured item. If you change your yarn weight, please choose an oversized hook that will work accordingly, and keep in mind that you can crochet for as long as you want on this piece provided you have enough yardage. This would also be a lovely way to showcase handspun, perhaps by “balancing” it with some plain yarn to let it pop through.
