Coral Reef Shawlette
Knit this gorgeous shawlette as a gift for a dear friend or treat yourself in your choice of worsted weight yarn. It can also be worn as a scarf or a cowl! Perfect for those yarns with long color runs such as Kuka Magic Wool DeLuxe or hand-painted yarns, or those that look hand-painted, like Noro, but also suited for solid colors. Works great in acrylics, wools, or blends. I used almost four 100-gram balls of wool for the first shawlette, and less than 14 oz. of acrylic for the second shawlette.
Knitted all in one piece, this romantic shawlette begins with the coral ruffle, which is worked from one side to the other, then continues knitted flat, side-to-side, and finishes with a picot edge. A tapestry needle is used to hem the picot edge. A US size 6 (4mm) circular needle at least 32 inches is suggested. The size is teens to s/m/l adult, as it is self-tied.
Blocking is optional, but I used 100% wool and blocking made the ruffles “ruffly” and made the shawlette look even more like red coral. It also made the eyelets more prominent which adds to the overall look of the design. I made a second shawlette in solid color acrylic, Red Heart Super Saver, and blocking added to the look of both the eyelets and the ruffles. I blocked the wool by dipping in warm water and pinning out to dry, and the acrylic by lightly steaming with a plastic vertical steamer. If using an iron do not touch the iron to the wool/yarn!
