The top is made out of round motifs that join as you go.
Hook sizes:
XS - 1.5 mm; S - 2.0 mm; M - 2.5 mm; L - 3.0 mm; XL - 3.5 mm;
The gauge per motif changes accordingly to the size needed, if using the proper suggested hook size.
In my experience, these tops took up to 6 balls of Aunt Lydia Crochet cotton thread in solid colors.
Variegates come in less yardage, so I suggest buying up to 8 balls.
White and ecru thread balls - come in more yards, so up to 5 balls should be fine.
