The design of this wrap is inspired by a Frank Lloyd Wright Tree of Life window on view at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. The window features columns of chevrons flanked by tiny mosaic-like squares of colored glass, which have been translated into knitted form as alternating columns of angular lace and knit-purl textures.

Although the overall effect is intricate, most of the pattern consists of an easily-memorized 
4-row repeat with a gently absorbing rhythm.

Choose fingering weight yarn to make a lighter wrap to wear on sunny days, or sport weight yarn for a heavier shawl to wear when the fog rolls in.

Construction: Casement Wrap is a long rectangle, worked outward from the center in two halves, beginning with a provisional cast on. The width of the wrap is not designed to be adjustable, but the length can easily be customized to suit the amount of yarn available.

Gauge and needle size:

• Fingering weight: 22 stitches and 30 rows to 4 inches in unblocked stockinette stitch using US 4 (3.5mm)

• Sport weight: 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches in unblocked stockinette stitch using US 6 (4mm)

It’s not crucial to match gauge, but a different gauge may affect the finished size and/or yarn amount needed.

Yarn requirements:

• Fingering weight (smaller, sunny peach) wrap shown in Fiber Circle Studio Scrumptious Sock, 2 skeins in Cake Batter - a total of 207g was used for the sample, as the skeins were overweight. Length of wrap is easily adjusted to use the amount of yarn available, but be sure to have at least 800 yards on hand for a wrap of comparable size.

• Sport weight (larger, foggy blue) wrap shown in Quince & Co. Chickadee, 6 skeins in Bird’s Egg.
