Breezy Cabana :: a striped, textural asymmetrical triangular shawl, knit using the condo stitch and simple garter stitch. With the generous wingspan and depth, this shawl is extremely wearable. The condo knitting creates a breezy, open fabric, making this shawl ideal for summer days and chilly nights.
Skill Level: Beginner. This is a great pattern for a beginner who wants to try a new technique, but is also a relaxing pattern for knitters of all levels. Techniques used: only knitting, striping yarn, condo knitting - alternating between large and small needles, simple increase and decrease.
Construction Notes and Customization: This asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit on the bias from tip to edge, using a combination of simple garter stitch and condo stitch stripes to add drama and texture. As the shawl grows, condo and simple garter knitting are combined by alternating Small and Large needles to create depth and texture. For those of you new to condo knitting, it is so much fun! By knitting one row with the Small needle, and the following row with the Large needle, an open mesh fabric resembling dropped stitches is created!
Feel free to use different size needles and yarn weights to obtain the gauge you want! The pattern is written as more of a formula for you to apply to any combinations you could dream of. It is easily customizable by adding or removing Sections. Because of the nature of condo knitting, the shawl grows very quickly, using very little yarn. Create your own amazing stash-buster version using scraps of yarn for a psychedelic striped shawl, or even using one color throughout would create a gorgeous textural wonder for your wardrobe. Try knitting with a linen or a cotton blend for the ultimate summer accessory. Mohair would also add amazing fun and fuzz!
Size: One size; 90” / 229 cm wingspan by 24” / 61 cm depth
Yarn: 667 yds / 610 m lace weight yarn
Color A: 230 yds / 210 m
Color B: 437 yds / 400 m
Shown in:
Color A: 1 skein Hedgehog Fibres Pure Cashmere Lace in Sorry Not Sorry (100% Cashmere goat; 437 yds per 50g)
Color B: 1 skein Hedgehog Fibres Pure Cashmere Lace in Fly (100% Cashmere goat; 437 yds per 50g)
Note: The yarn that I used in this sample, Pure Cashmere lace, has recently been discontinued. This is a fabulous project to use up any skeins of that yarn you might have in your stash, especially those beautiful one-of-a-kind Club skeins! Hedgehog Fibres has another beautiful lace weight blend, Cashmere Merino (50% Cashmere goat, 50% Merino wool; 328 yds per 50g), that would make a wonderful substitution for this pattern. Please note that you would most likely require 4 skeins of yarn due to the yardage difference, 2 skeins of each color. If you do substitute, the same needle sizes could be used to achieve a very similar effect.
Needles:
Small: 40” US 3 / 3.25mm circular needles
Large: 40” US 15 / 10mm circular needles
Circular needles are used to accommodate large number of stitches. Interchangeable circular needles will also work, if you have the sizes needed to obtain gauge.
Yarn and Needle Substitutions: If you are going to substitute a different yarn weight and needles, swatching is a great way to see what will work best for you. The shawl also starts out with very few stitches, so can easily be started over again if you are unhappy with the colors together, or the fabric outcome. For instance, if you want to use a fingering weight yarn, try using US size 5 / 3.75mm for the Small, and US size 15 / 10mm for the Large! Or with DK weight, use US size 7 / 4.5mm for Small, and US size 17 / 12mm for the Large. You get the idea! Please note that using different yarn and needle sizes will result in shawl size variations. Two skeins total will most likely be enough for fingering weight yarns, but you may need to omit a section if you are using a larger gauge yarn, like DK or Worsted.
Be sure to check out all of my amazing test knitters’ projects!! Not only are there a few who knit lace versions, there are also several who knit shawls using fingering and DK weight yarns!!
