With alternating lace and stocking stitch panels, Beatrice is a lightweight triangular shawl that’s perfect for both special occasions and summer evenings.

Knitted in a single skein of lace weight yarn on 4mm needles, its light, open weave and three panels of delicate lace are perfect for showing off the beauty of hand dyed yarns. Its simple top-down triangular construction makes it a great introduction to lace shawl knitting – or a soothing project for the more experienced knitter.

Key information
The Beatrice shawl follows standard top-down triangle shawl construction, beginning with a garter tab cast-on. There’s a 3 stitch garter border at the start and end of each row, with yarn over increases worked at the start and end of the main panel, and either side of a centre stitch.

Beatrice alternates panels of stocking stitch with three lace panels, each of which is fully charted at the end of the pattern. The charts show one half of the shawl, and don’t include the garter tab or centre stitch. After working across the chart once, work the centre stitch in stocking stitch, and then work the chart again.

Suggested yarn: The Yarn Collective Portland lace, 100g/860m, or other lace weight yarn
Suggested needles (and notions): 4.00mm (US 6) long circular needle, 2 stitch markers
Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this project, but the sample measures 19.5st and 31 rows over 10cm (4in), measured over stocking stich.
Finished size: Depends on how much the shawl is stretched during blocking. The sample measures 75cm (29.5in) from top to bottom, and 158cm (62.25in) across, but was deliberately left with a wavy edge. If fully straightened out, the final measurements will be larger.
