Ballyfaron
♫ The Music ♫
Turlough O’Carolan, legendary Irish harpist and composer, spent his teen years in Ballyfarnon, in County Roscommon; I took a small liberty in simplifying the name just a tad.
The tam and cowl are both knit in the round. The tam is worked from the crown down to the band in five identical sections. The cable pattern panels of the cowl match the cable pattern used in the tam. The cowl begins with an I-Cord Cast On and ends with an I-Cord Bind Off; a few sewn stitches are required to close up the ends of the I-Cord therefore leave an 8” / 20.5 cm tail.
Stitch patterns are charted only.
Yarn
Due to the slight colour variations of hand-dyed yarns, when more than one hank is required it is recommended that knitters alternate between two hanks of yarn every two rows for a more even colour distribution.
- Tam only requires 1 (2, 2) skeins;
- Cowl only requires 2 (3) skeins;
- Tam (any size) and small cowl requires 3 skeins;
- Tam (any size) and large cowl requires 4 skeins.

Special Designer Note
When working the Setup Rnd for the cowl (bottom of 3rd column on p.1): note that this rnd begins with a “sl 1”; this st is already on the right needle since it was worked as part of the previous rnd.
