I made two versions of the same pattern – square shape and classic beanie. It’s all about stranded colorwork knitting technique. I applied „The Turtle“, geometric ethno motif rooted in Balkan tradition, modified and transformed through my filter. The higher contrast – the better effect. It’s very common and recognizable motif on the Pirot’s kilims (traditional Serbian handwoven rugs). Bright colors, strong contrasts, a lot of red are used in the making of the kilims, along with the fantastic creativity of the weavers.
These hats are worked from the bottom up. The square shape version ends by 3-needle bind off (you can also use kitchener stitch or grafting). You have basic instruction in written pattern (in English) and complete charts.
It’s assumed that you are skilled in stranded knitting and knitting in the round.
This pattern can be used for neck warmers, mittens, pillowcases, bags, blankets…

For these samplers I used:
1. Yarns:
A. Square shape hat: MC (main or background color) ~ 40gr of Mondial, Merinos Extra superwash, nature beige (color 300), DK weight yarn (one ball has 268yds~245m/100gr) and
CC (contrast or motif color) - ~ 40gr of Mondial, Merinos Extra superwash, self striping in orange/beige/brown 419, DK weight yarn (one ball has 268yds~245m/100gr);
B. Classic beanie hat: MC (background color) ~ 30gr of Mondial, Merinos Extra superwash, self striping 419, DK yarn (one ball has 268yds~245m/100gr) and
CC (contrast or motif color) ~ 30gr of Alize Superlana Klasik, Sport weight woolen bland yarn in terracotta (one ball has 306yds~280m/100gr);
2. Needles:
* 16“(40cm) circular needles in US 4 / 3.5mm;
* plus for square hat: an auxiliary needle for bind-off row;
* plus for beanie crown: set of DPN’s 4+1 in US 4 / 3.5mm;
* tapestry needle;
3. 6 stitch markers;

Size: one women’s / teens size (fits all); For man’s size, it’s not easy to change a motive, but we can use one number larger needles (3,75mm or 4mm) and DK weight yarn. The gauge will be slightly different, of course.
