Ardmore gansey

A simple gansey with a slightly more refined fit than traditional designs due to its top-down, set-in sleeves.

Pattern Notes
The body of this gansey is made in the round, from the bottom up. Stitches are put on hold at the underarms and front and back are worked separately. The back of the gansey continues in stockinette, and,after a short section of rib, a set of increases are worked (to enable the dimensions & gauge of the upper chest to equal that of the plain stockinette used throughout the rest of the garment). Cable panel patterns are then worked over the upper front chest, and the upper back continues in plain stockinette. Front and back are grafted together at the shoulders, and sleeves are worked from the top down, using the short row set-in method. After rib is added around the neckline the gansey is complete.

Size and fit
Select a size above your actual body measurements, with the amount of ease required. Ganseys suit a fitted look (as shown, worn in the 7th size with very slight positive ease) but will also work with up to 2.5 ins positive ease for a more comfortable and roomy fit.

Yarn quantities have been calculated to include an additional 5% for each size, to allow for swatching as well as small differences in gauge and skein length.

60-80cm 24-32in Below-gauge-size circular needle (one size smaller than your st st gauge-size needles), for working rib
60-80cm 24-32in Gauge-size circular needle, for working body
2 x 2mm US 0 circular needle in your preferred length for picking up sleeve caps
Gauge-size needle(s) of your preferred type for working small circumferences
Below-gauge-size needle(s) of your preferred type for knitting small circumferences
Cable needle. Stitch markers. Waste yarn or spare needles for holding sts. Tapestry needle

Gauge
22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm 4in over st st (and rev st st), using gauge-size needles
24 sts of chart C panel to 8cm 3?in, using gauge-size needles
10 sts of chart B/D panel to 3.5cm 1?in, using gauge-size needles
For reference, gauge was achieved with a 3.75mm needle.
