Life in Iceland was not easy in the days when knitted inserts in soft shoes were in common use. No colored yarn could be wasted and leftovers were highly suitable for knitting decorative inserts. Everyone liked to own something beautiful like a pair of inserts with roses.

A popular vintage style scarf and old Icelandic shoe insoles in a rose pattern - these were my inspiration for knitting a lovely but practical scarf with roses. It is knitted in Icelandic intarsia (intarsia in garter stitch) as described in my book, Icelandic knitting using rose-patterns. You will need one skein MC and leftovers yarns for the roses.

In the spirit of the old inserts, the pattern is free for you to knit a beautiful scarf for someone you love.
