Renate Foos has been passionate for designing fashion knits for over 30 years. Over this time, Renate has designed for major German fashion labels, operated her own handknitting shop. Her work has also been featured in galleries throughout Germany. Renate is now one of the first global knitwear designers for the SMC Select premium brand.

Renate lives in southern Germany and finds her inspiration in the colors, textures and new varieties of handknitting yarns introduced each season. She enjoys using her skills to interpret world fashion trends into creative, knittable garment and accessory designs.

“My own inspiration is led by my personal surrounding and activities, contemporary architecture and especially by the up-to-date styles and ideas of well-known designers presented in fashion magazines or runways. This has always been fascinating for me. I love materials and texture, beautiful colors and see myself as very open-minded and therefore curious for all ‘beautiful and creative styles’. Fashion, trends and unique ideas enable me to develop and be creative.”

Renate attained her technical mastery of handknitting, crochet, sewing and embroidery in a variety of different schools and programs. She has broadened her fashion skills by working as a professional color consultant for the European handknitting industry.

As a former yarn store owner, Renate has firsthand knowledge of the handknitting consumer and their needs, experience that she uses to mix her fashion savvy with the demand of the knitter. Her passion for fine fiber knitting designs is shown best by her work for the SMC-Select premium brand.
